Active Schools Flag<\/b><\/p>\n
Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh is striving to obtain the Active Schools Flag and we are currently initiating the process. We have formed a commitee that comsists of teachers, non teaching staff, management, parents and members of the outside school community. We will be running “Active Schools Week” from 19th-24th April. During this week activites will be available for students, parents and staff. We will be encouraging the whole school community to get active.<\/p>\n
The Active School Flag will be awarded to schools that:<\/p>\n

- Teach a broad and balanced PE curriculum.<\/li>\n

World Marathon Day<\/b><\/p>\n
On the 30th of September thirty students from first year went to UL to take part in World Marathon Day. Each student had to run seven laps of the running track. When we started running it was fine, but near the end it was very tiring. Five people from my class went. At the start of the race we performed well but we really had to motivate each other during the last few laps. each group had a different colour t-shirt and you had to keep track of your turn in the relay. While it was a very challenging experience it was very enjoyable and we really had to work as a team. I think everyone benefitted from it because we all had to work together and encourage each other on the running track. It was a little cold and rainy but it was a day out I really enjoyed.Ms N\u00ed Sh\u00failleabh\u00e1in really helped us along and gave us some good tips on how to improve our running along with Liam Cantwell from Limerick City Sports Partnership.<\/p>\n

The boys under 19s basketball team have progressed to the regional final again this year by beating Shannon Comp, Villiers and Abbeylough. We won two close matches against Villiers and Shannon Comp, narrowly beating both teams. the Abbey game was a different story on the other hand as we had the upper-hand for the most part of the game outscoring their\u00a0 team in every quarter. one of our aspiring young talents is Emmet Browne, he is a key player to our squad. These last few years would not have been possible without the help and dedication of our fantastic coach Adrian Quaid. Adrian has help us over the past number of years and we appreciate his help and support. there are 14 players on our team, Emmet Browne, Ruairi Browne,Ryan Foley, Niall Foley, Mike McDonogh, Olly Deegan, Ben Walsh, Eoin Hegarty, Ben Ryan, Daniel Long, Ryan o Shaughnessy, Diarmuid Cadogan, Stephen Healy and Jeffrey Lane. Teachers have started using iTunesU in order to share their notes and resources with the students. It is very significant that students do not lose out on any course material or assignments if absent from school as all notes are \u2018pushed\u2019 onto their own individual iPad, via iTunesU.<\/p>\n

The National Ploughing Championships<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
On the 24th of September the TY year group took a trip to the Ploughing Championships that were taking place in Stradbally, Co. Laois. Every student gathered outside the school from about half past six that morning and the bus departed just after seven. The bus journey was relatively long, lasting about 2 hours but everyone had good craic with their friends. Just before the bus pulled into the parking area at the Championships everyone quickly changed into their wellies – just in case the field happened to be wet or muddy. There was a lot to be seen!! There were stands selling hats, caps, bracelets, wellies, farming accessories and of course food. There was also a smaller scale version of the popular theme park Funderland. At around half past two that afternoon, the year group rejoined together outside the RT\u00c8 tent and slowly but surely we made our way back to our bus, and returned to the school at about five o clock that evening.<\/p>\n

This year as well as entering students in the Senior Category we also are delighted to have students from 2nd year entering the Junior Category.<\/p>\n

Business Studies in First Year<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
In the first term, all first year students were taking part in Business Studies classes. Groups were formed in each class and each group has the task of setting up a Caf\u00e9. During this task students learnt the importance of Brand Names, Logo\u2019s, Slogans, Jingles, Advertising and accounts etc in helping to set up your business. Each student gave the task a 100% and the standard was extremely high. In first place were the students with Caf\u00e9 Sleeping Beautea and in 2nd place was Caf\u00e9 TeaFood. Well done to all that took part.<\/p>\n

Limerick Chamber of Commerce Competition<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
In 2015 Limerick Chamber will celebrate its 200th Anniversary and will hold a competition for Business Studies students to research a business or entrepreneur from a period of time over the last 200 years, examine the business landscape in which it operated and compare it to a similar business running today or in the future. GCL business department are delighted to have students from 2nd, Transition and 5th Year entering the competition in both the Junior and Senior Cycle projects. First prize consists of 11 tablets and we hope they will be coming to GCL.<\/p>\n

On the 6th of October Sixth Year students of Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh traveled to Liscannor Bay and Lahinch as part of their Geographical Investigation which is worth 20% of their Leaving Cert exam.\u00a0 The students studied the composition of the cliffs and cliff erosion at Creg Beach and Clauhan Beach. This field study helped to develop the students geographical skills as they used a variety of geographical instruments that they had not used previous to this and it brought to life what they had studied in class on coastal erosion. It was a great day out and the weather was good to us. Sixth year students are now busy writing up their field study reports.<\/p>\n

The Cork Pops concert was excellent. The trip on the bus was more than an hour long but it felt like two minutes. I sat next to my friend Emer and my other friend Naoise sat in front of us. On the way we stopped in Supermacs to buy food. Emer and I shared a garlic chip n\u2019 cheese, it was delicious. The first instrument to play was the violin but we also heard an oboe, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet and horn. The music was lovely. Keith McKinerney came out onto the stage and sang a few songs.\u00a0 Everyone was standing and dancing. Even every TEACHER was dancing!! Overall, I enjoyed the concert a lot and I\u2019d love to go again.<\/p>\n

We do traditional music every week on a Tuesday with our teacher, an Mh\u00e1istir Mac an R\u00ed. We did a fundrasiser for Tr\u00f3caire on 26th September and we raised \u20ac330. We played a lot of pieces like Boys of Blue Hill, Maurice Lennon`s and Denis Murphy`s. Every couple of months we play for services and concerts. We will be playing our instruments for the Christmas service soon. We got to play for the Minister, Jan O\u2019 Sullivan for the ceremony for the Brat Glas in November and we will perform at the Christmas concert on the 11th December. We are very good in the traditional music club because we have an excellent teacher!<\/p>\n

This year, our school Christmas concert will be held in the Belltable on the 11th of December. A huge number of students are taking part this year from first year to six year, there will also be a special appearance from Mick and Michelle Mulcahy that night, for us, this is a huge privilege as the Mulcahys are renowned around the world for their traditional music. I will be taking part with a band called Gaisc\u00edoch alongside other incredibly talented musicians and bands, we\u2019re all really excited to be taking part. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the other great performances that are lined up for the concert. Everyone really looks forward to the Christmas concert each year and this year is no different. The concert will start during the day for the students and during the evening family and parents are more than welcome to attened.<\/p>\n

Myself and a couple of other students went to the Axes theatre in Ballymun to take part in a music competition called Feachtas. We went up on the 21st of October with an Mh\u00e1istre\u00e1s N\u00ed Mhuir\u00edosa. It was Sinead and I from fifth year, Grace Austin and Conor Wallace from sixth year and Chloe Milliken, Jeaic MacShe\u00e1in and Eddie Hellewell from third year. Sinead wrote the song we sang and Jeaic wrote the song their group sang. I was really nervous about being on stage as I had never been before. We had a great day when we arrived, practising, performing and listening to the other acts. The prize for the winning band was a voucher for a music shop in\u00a0 Dublin and also the chance to record their song in a studio. Unfortunately we didn\u2019t win the competition and we were a little disappointed but the group that won definitely deserved to win. At least we had an amazing day and it gave us the experience of being in a battle of the bands.<\/p>\n

In the choir, we learn a lot of new songs every week. Now we are learning songs for the Christmas service, for example Ring Christmas Bells, O Holy Night and In The Bleak Mid-Winter. We really enjoy choir. We made new friends and we went to the Cork Pops concert in Cork. Weeks of preparation and work, on the part of both teachers and students leading up to the start of the year service. Symbols and artworks designed by members of every class, and practice by the students taking part, speakers and musicians alike. An impressive array of talent, all celebrated and demonstrated on one day. An eventful day, definitely. I, myself, was part of the soloists. On the day, we all went down to Saint Mary’s Church to practice. Between the choir, the speakers, the soloists and the musicians, and the teachers, there was a large crowd of us. We all went through the pieces twice in preparation, including the soloists. I played a modern piece called “All of Me” by Jon Schmidt on the piano. There were eleven other soloists that played at the service, playing pieces on the piano, the guitar, the flute and singing. There was a fantastic atmosphere when the classes and teachers entered the church. Everyone sat in, and the service started. It was a fantastic service, with an electric atmosphere.<\/p>\n

The stage was massive with spotlights. The audience was full aswell. We won the competition and went on to the All Irelands in Dublin. We changed our routine a small bit and wore different outfits. They received a guided tour of Leinster House learning about the house and it’s workings. This will prove very helpful in their preparation for their CSPE exam later in the school year. The students also visited the History museum adjacent to Leinster House as part of their trip. During our fantastic Maths Week we organised a Maths Competition for our Transition year students. The students took pictures of Maths in everyday life on a Maths trail and adding captions to their photographs. The competition was enjoyed by all! Our first years have spent most of the winter learning about workshop safety, woodworking tools and how the tree grows. At the moment they are working hard to complete a little boat project before we finish up for Christmas<\/p>\n

This group have just finished a fantastic CD stand and the general standard has been very high. They are now working on a bird house to keep the Robins warm over the Christmas<\/p>\n
Third Year<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
The third years are working very hard at designing their Junior Cert projects at the minute. The ideas they have come up with so far have been very interesting and we are really looking forward to seeing the designs realised.<\/p>\n
Fifth Year<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
It\u2019s been a really busy term for the fifth years as they began new courses for the Leaving Cert.<\/p>\n
In Construction Studies the students have been learning about the domestic construction techniques and are currently honing their woodworking skills in creating dovetails and cross-halving joints.<\/p>\n
In DCG the lads are developing their draughting skills and creating 3D models on Solidworks\u00ae<\/p>\n
Sixth Year<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
The students are flat out working to complete their Leaving Cert Projects and we are really looking forward to seeing some of this excellent work completed.<\/p>\n

GCL students had a blast during this year\u2019s science week.\u00a0 The title this year was \u2018Science in our Kitchen\u2019 and that\u2019s exactly what the students produced. There was coke exploding, potions prepared, teachers on fire and clouds produced by dry ice. There was little difference between our classes and those in Hogsworth!<\/p>\n
The students and teachers were delighted with the standard of projects presented in class for \u2018Eola\u00ed na Bliana\u2019. Students showcased an impressive scope of ideas, each backed up with outstanding practical evidence. With such high standards displayed it was a tough task for the science department to pick the winners of Eola\u00ed na Bliana. Eventually\u00a0 groups were awarded at a special science awards throughout the week. It is fair to say that although our first year students have only just started studying this new and exciting subject, we are already seeing natural flair and enthusiasm in the labs. The future is most definitely looking bright for science in GCL!<\/p>\n
The second years were given a hard task of researching and experimenting on specific titles.\u00a0 The projects were written up in accordance to Coursework B of the Junior Certificate so that the students would gain experience at recording and analysing science results. They also visited UL to see a mad scientist performing crazy experiments.<\/p>\n
Our fifth years were given the opportunity to plan, record and edit videos of experiments they had carried out. This experience will greatly benefit the students going forward as well as providing invaluable revision tools for next year. Our fifth year chemistry students were also\u00a0 taking part in professional video shoot showing exemplar titration methods, well done to all. They also spent some time researching and coming up with some witty chemistry jokes, for example: \u2018Why did the acid go to the gym? To become a buffer solution!\u2019<\/p>\n
Our sixth years took part in the ISTA regional science quiz and they did very well. Comhghairdeas guys!!\u00a0 Our third and sixth year students are working incredibly hard for the exams and we support them all the way to their success. All of your students took part in Tr\u00e1th na gCeist for science week through Google Drive and we had three worthy winners, Emmet Frawley, Eoin Jardine and Meave Fahy.<\/p>\n

Transition Year<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
I am only three months into Transition year and the amount of activities and events that have happened so far is almost unbelievable. Earlier this year, I thought I had my career and future sorted, my heart set on a career in journalism. However, upon entering Transition year, I’m starting to see a whole new range of careers and occupations opening up to me after attending copious amounts of career mornings and open days. I’ve sampled the Zoology Department of NUIG, the Engineering Department in UL and the English Department in Mary I. Each one more impressive than the last.<\/p>\n
This year has been a fantastic opportunity to try new things and start new, interesting projects I didn’t have the time to undertake in other years due to studies and exams. Since the beginning of this year I have partaken in a Team Building day in Derg Isle, received an insight into the world of agriculture at the Ploughing Championships, joined an AIB bank team to help create a new innovative bank idea to compete against other schools and I was also granted the opportunity to attend the Web Summit technology convention and act as an investor with 20 other students after winning a marketing competition. I am currently undergoing a week of work experience at Spin South West, a local radio station. Here I am studying how the radio works and what kind of jobs I will have if I choose to work in radio. I am also volunteering at the Share a Dream Foundation, helping to bring happiness to disabled children.<\/p>\n

Ellen O\u2019Sullivan and Sharon Lynch from An Taisce Green Schools and Limerick Smarter Travel visited the school on Tuesday 25th of November to carry out a Travel Mapping workshop with all second year students. All second year classes had an hour of the Travel Mapping Workshop where they studied maps of Limerick City at different scales. Students identified the location of Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh, their route to school and home, locations of interest in the city, possible park and stride locations, bus routes around the city and what bus routes the school could promote. The reason for this workshop was to make students more aware of the environmental impacts of the different methods of travel and to try to change students\u2019 attitudes towards a greener method of travelling as well as promoting the health and safety aspects of travel. Students also identified alternative methods of transport to and from school.<\/p>\n
Following this workshop, students assessed routes for the positive and negative attributes relative to walking in the form of a\u00a0 \u2018Walk-ability Audit\u2019, examples of this included, the timing on crossings, is there enough space on footpaths etc. Students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and the walk-ability audit, it got students thinking about how to become a greener citizen and developed their mapping skills and local geographical and travel information.<\/p>\n
The Green Schools Committee are very excited about the travel theme and are excited about implementing their ideas in the coming year. We are privileged to have such a fantastic Environmental Officer from An Taisce working with us to help us implement and promote this new theme.<\/p>\n

Minister for Education and Skills Raises our Third Green Flag\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
On Friday 28th of November the Green Schools Committee raised their third Green Flag for Water Conservation. This flag raising ceremony was held to celebrate the hard work and success of the Green Schools Committee and the whole school community over the last two years, as we worked towards achieving our third green flag. Students, teachers, parents, representatives of the Schools Board of Management, Parents Council and members of Limerick City Council and An Taisce all attended the ceremony.<\/p>\n
Eibhl\u00edn Halpin (5th year student) played beautifully on the keyboard while guests took their seats. David Sheehan (Chairperson of the Green Schools Committee) welcomed everyone to the ceremoney. Evan Sheehan (3rd Year) spoke to the audience about the hard and continued work of the committee over the last two years in achieving this flag. GCL\u2019s trad group closed the ceremony with some beautifully played energetic music.<\/p>\n
Our Principal, Donncha \u00d3 Treasaigh praised the students on their efforts to educate their fellow students on preserving the environment. Minister Jan O Sullivan gave an inspirational speech. She praised the students for their passion and wished us all the success as we continue to work towards our fourth green flag.<\/p>\n
The Green Schools Committee, our Principal, Donncha \u00d3 Treasaigh and the Minister then made their way to the fourth floor of the school building to raise the flag. Students and teachers applauded from the ground floor as they watched the flag being raised. It now fly\u2019s proudly alongside our two other green flags, high above the city.\u00a0 Refreshments were provided after the ceremony.<\/p>\n

The 2013\/2014 Student Council came to an end just after the mid term break when a new Student Council was elected at the beginning of November 2014. The old council had done fantastic work throughout their term of office attending school functions, discussing school policies with School Management,etc. Their most notable achievement of the previous Student Council was their role in attaining a new Student Canteen which has gone from strength to strength since its introduction to the school.<\/p>\n
After a very competitive Election Campaign, the new Council was elected.\u00a0 They then participated in a half day\u2019s training with Doncal Fitzgibbon, facilitator which they really enjoyed and benefitted from. We are really looking forward to working with the Student Council during the year.<\/p>\n
