\nThe Department of Education and Skills has approved the purchase of a permanent site for Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh, and the construction of a 750 pupil school to cater for the demand for places at Ireland\u2019s biggest co-educational All-Irish post-primary school.<\/p>\n

The school will be located on the grounds of the former Dawn Dairies \/ Kerry Group processing plant on Old Clare Street, Limerick.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s announcement has been warmly welcomed by parents, pupils, staff and the Limerick and Clare ETB (Patrons of Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh).  Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh has occupied rented accommodation since it opened in 2006 with 31 pupils.  The school now caters for 585 pupils, and it is expected that demand will continue to rise in the forthcoming years due to the rapid growth of Gaelscoileanna in the Limerick City region.<\/p>\n

Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O\u2019Sullivan said: \u201cThe development of a new campus for Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh was one of my priorities when I became Minister for Education.   I have carefully monitored the growth of Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh since it opened, and the success of this great school means it has outgrown its current rented building.  The school has a very bright future and its needs a building that can accommodate its long-term development.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project will enhance the City of Limerick, provide employment in the community and facilitate the pupils and parents who wish for their children to attend an All-Irish medium post-primary school.   I am glad to have helped the school in this major development and will continue to work closely with the staff, students and parents of Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh as it goes from strength-to-strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nGeorge O Callaghan, Chief Executive of Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board said that \u201cWe are very pleased to hear of this exciting and positive development for Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh.  The school has grown significantly since it opened in 2006 and it now requires its own custom designed and developed campus to meet the needs of a big school.  We will be working closely with the Building Unit of the Department of Education and Skills and the Limerick City & County Council to progress the development of the new campus to \u2018turn-key\u2019 stage as speedily as possible. The necessary contracts are being drawn up and will be put before Limerick and Clare education Board for approval. It is particularly exciting that a city centre location will be developed to facilitate such an important function as that of the education of young people\u201d.<\/p>\n

Donncha O’Treasaigh, Principal of Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh stated that “We are delighted with today\u2019s announcement for the pupils, staff and parents who are involved in Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh.  We are most grateful to all those who have contributed, tirelessly, to ensuring that Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh is allowed to flourish close to its current location \u2013 Sir Harry\u2019s Mall, where the school first started in 2006.  The dearly departed former Chairperson of the Board of Management Mr. Frank Prendergast (RIP), strongly advocated that Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh would remain in the City to serve the region, and his wishes have been realised with this announcement.  We are especially indebted to the Minister for Education & Skills, Jan O\u2019 Sullivan TD, for all of her work in making Frank\u2019s dream and our wishes possible.<\/p>\n
