<\/span>To mark the beginning of UNESCO\u2019s Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2019, Twitter has launched a new handbook for educators, entitled <\/span>Teaching and Learning with Twitter<\/a><\/span><\/span>. Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board is delighted that the handbook features a Case Study profile of one of its post-primary schools \u2013 Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh.<\/span><\/div>\n

Donncha \u00d3 Treasaigh, Director of Schools at Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, praised all involved in compiling this very useful guide for educators. He said: \u201cTeachers in our schools are leading the way in showing the world how to use technology, such as Twitter, to enrich learning and teaching for our students \u2013 there is no medium more powerful than social media to amplify and transform learning\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kevin \u00d3 Raghallaigh, Principal of Gaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh, said that: \u201cGaelchol\u00e1iste Luimnigh is continuously promoting and nurturing the use of technology, like Twitter and this has greatly enhanced our ability to promote critical thinking and has given our students huge ownership of their own learning\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

This easy-to-read, informative and fun handbook aims to help educators equip younger generations with media literacy skills, in turn enabling them to ask the right questions about content they engage with online, and critically analyse news and information they engage with on the service. <\/span><\/p>\n

The resource is relevant to Irish post-primary schools, particularly those who offer the new short course for Junior Cycle – Digital Media Literacy (DML)<\/span><\/p>\n

Creating and sharing media has become an increasingly important part of life in how young people communicate with each other and the wider world. Young people actively manipulate digital media to express themselves online. <\/span><\/p>\n

The resource contains best practice guidelines on media literacy from UNESCO, and also a reading list curated by UNESCO\u2019s programme specialists, which is intended to guide educators through current teaching literature on this topic. It will be initially translated into 9 different languages; including English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Arabic, Japanese, Swedish, Hindi, with future plans to translate it for other countries.  <\/span><\/p>\n
